Are you passionate about local food and enjoy learning? If so, The Flying Apron wants you!
We are looking for candidates who share our Local Food Philosophy and want to grow with us in our business over the long term.
Who are we?
The Flying Apron Inn & Cookery is a family-run business in Rural NS. Our business operates year round, open 6 days a week in the summer season and 4 days a week from November to April. All culinary activities at The Flying Apron are managed and run by co-owner and Chef, Chris Velden.
Our location includes:
- Charming, 4-Star Inn with five ensuite guest rooms
- Licensed Restaurant with 45 indoor seats and 20 seats on our seasonal patio
- Food Shop stocked with our own preserved products and locally produced products
- Cookery School where we offer hands-on and demo classes year round
- Art Gallery featuring local artists
- Used Book Store
In addition, we operate the very popular Dining on the Ocean Floor experiences at Burntcoat Head Park. We are known for our unique on site events (special event brunch buffets & dinners, Meet Your Farmer Dinners, pig roasts). In addition, we offer limited off-site catering and participate in culinary special events (Devour Food & Film Fest, Taste of Nova Scotia events, etc.).
Why should you work with us?
Our food philosophy is simple….We do Local! Our commitment to source fresh, seasonal ingredients from our local partner farmers and producers makes us unique. This is a great opportunity to spend a season (or more!) learning from an experienced chef with over 40 years of experience in the industry, including running restaurant kitchens, running a world-renowned culinary institute, and now operating The Flying Apron as a thriving multi-faceted business in rural NS. Chef Velden’s contribution to growing the profile of culinary experiences in Nova Scotia was recognized with the 2017 Taste of NS Culinary Ambassador Award. You will learn not only about the availability of seasonal food in Nova Scotia; but build relationships with the Farmers who grow for us. And you will work with beautiful, fresh local food. Environmental sustainability is very important to us; we use only sustainable fish & seafood and local meat. Giving you an opportunity to learn more about whole animal butchery, charcuterie and the growing NS sustainable seafood sector. Our menu changes weekly to feature the best of what’s in season and your influence and creativity will be a part of creating these menus. The Flying Apron is known for our house made delicious desserts, giving you an opportunity to grow your bread baking and pastry skills.
